Recall petitions (giant blue vat) against Dan Kapanke being delivered to Wisconsin Government Accountability Office by Richelle Zimmerman, a social worker from La Crosse
At roughly 4pm central time today, Wisconsin Democrats formally filed the recall petition against Republican state Senator Dan Kapanke. They ended up filing 30,000 21,700 signatures, roughly twice 140% the 15,588 required. Here are some tweets from an activist, "aftrachel," who was at the filing (GAB stand for Government Accountability Board):
A little over a hundred here at GAB now, told District 32 will be here soon - by the way, I helped collect these sigs!
District 32 arrived and all hundred are going inside GAB.
Marching up 4 flights of the GAB building, total silence, trying not to get kicked out
http://yfrog.com/... Total silence then applause as it was announced 30,000 signatures!
This is an astounding organizational achievement, And there is there is a lot more on the way:
The chair of the Democratic Party of Wisconsin is confident that at least six of the eight recall elections of state Senators that the party is seeking will be successful, leading to an unprecedented set of recall elections in the summer or fall.
In an interview, Mike Tate predicted that more districts would turn in their recall petitions early, like they did today with Dan Kapanke. “I see a tremendous amount of activity and energy on the ground,” Tate said. “We have people going door to door. You’ll see other elections filing under the 60-day window.”
Please, reward good Democrats and support the recall effort by contributing $5 to the Democratic Party of Wisconsin.
Update: Turns out the actual number was 21,700. Still very impressive--140% of what was needed--but not 30,000. Apparently, what happened is that someone shouted "30" at the event, and it got tweeted a lot. It wasn't malicious--just an honest mistake.
